I admit I wasn’t particularly interested in the Rhyme battles, but at least the fight sequences weren’t boring. The art always was the biggest selling point, and it definitely delivers.Īnother highlight is the clever use of transitions and minimal animation that made the art seem a lot less static. And the game isn’t stingy with its art, boasting over a hundred different CGs (not even counting all the high-quality background images). (Some of my favorite designs outside the main cast are Trip, Nain, and the Alphas.) The world of Midorijima just oozes with so much style it’s hard not to get pulled in. I also can’t help but gush over the spectacular character design, with even the most minor characters having that visual flair. A good chunk of my playtime was spent admiring the art, from the vibrant backgrounds to crisp CGs. I couldn’t find an exact word count anywhere, but after 20+ hours of playtime and no real gameplay, I realized that I’d unintentionally fooled myself into reading a book… for fun! I hadn’t done that in ages.īut enough background let’s get into the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly(?) of Nitro+CHiRAL’s flagship title.įor a 10-year-old game, DRAMAtical Murder’s visuals hold up really well, perhaps owing to its futuristic setting. (While I’ve played VNs like Zero Escape and Danganronpa, I’d argue those are more akin to adventure games.) Even I was surprised that I managed to finish the game. In retrospect, DRAMAtical Murder was probably my first real introduction to the visual novel genre.
Fast forward to 2022 when a post-covid winter break hit, and I had a lot more time than I could kill (and my own computer). So, I forgot about the game for quite a long time.

I was far from your innocent middle schooler, but even I wasn’t crazy enough to install eroge on the family desktop. The Tumblr dashboard practically drip-fed it to a generation of mentally ill teenagers, but I never did play it myself until I was an adult (which was absolutely for the best). Unsurprisingly, I knew about the game long before I ever played it.
Regardless, I hope my rambling will at least encourage more discussion about this gem of a game.
What better time to write a 7-page paper about it? I say paper, but this is more of a vaguely organized compilation of my thoughts on the series. I have the almost supernatural ability of being entirely too late to fandoms, and the nearly decade-old DRAMAtical Murder is the most egregious example.
